Feeding Puppies

Dog delivery doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d like it to. Females may refuse to feed puppies, may not feed them due to lack of milk, or may even die. Duties fall on the owner. What to prepare for?

Up to 2 weeks

It is advisable to use your mother’s nipples for milk to be able to feed her puppies at least for a while. The first feeding is very important. Newborn babies have an active immune system and are given substances for growth. If you can’t get milk, you will have to switch to artificial substitutes right away.

It is not always possible to get a cherished jar of nutrient powder. At the very least, the mixture is prepared by yourself. 800 ml of whole cow’s milk is mixed with 200 ml of cream, egg yolk and 2 drops of multivitamins. Milk should be unremoved, cream is better to take home, but it is also suitable for children. The most important are vitamins A and D.

A little is fed every 2 hours. They need round-the-clock feeding. The food is warmed up in a water bath. Determine the temperature in practice: drip on the elbow fold. If the liquid is slightly warm (not hot!), it can be given to puppies. After 1 week, the interval between meals will start to increase slightly.

Only after 3 weeks will you have a short 6-hour night break. It sounds disappointing, but you shouldn’t neglect the mode. Babies get dehydrated quickly.

Warm mixture is poured into a bottle with a nipple. The size of the hole in the rubber should be such that the babies are not drowned or tired. In some pet stores you can buy special puppy bottles. If your puppies give up the norm, you can use pipettes and syringes without a needle. Don’t do it without good reason, as you suppress the reflex.

Massage your puppies’ bellies with a soft, warm cloth and lightly dampened in warm water before feeding. If your mother refuses to take care of your puppies, you’ll have to help them go to the toilet.

To do this, use the same cloth to iron the baby between the hind legs first. When your puppy has had a little need, move closer to the thighs. Usually babies go to the toilet after eating and sleeping.

How do you know if the puppy is full? Look at the tummy. A well-fed baby has a rounded, full puppy. In addition, a satisfied puppy turns away from his nipple and falls asleep slowly. A hungry calf turns off literally because he’s tired before he can get enough of it.

After two weeks.

Two weeks later, puppies’ eyes open and their hearing erupts. During this time, they start to eat their own food. From the 18th-19th day of their lives, the puppies try their own food. Teach the babies to eat the saucer. The first product to be used is cottage cheese. It is the closest to milk. It is desirable to cook it yourself, although you can also use a shop. It is better to buy children’s cottage cheese without additives.

To prepare cottage cheese you need milk (1 liter). Fill a jar with it and put it into a pot of water. When the liquid heats up (about 50 °C), add 20 ml of 10% calcium chloride to the milk. Actively stir and immediately remove from the fire after boiling. When lumps form, strain the mass with gauze. Push it back. Done.

Do not give up the substitute immediately! Give the puppies half a teaspoon of new treats in the first 24 hours. If everything is fine, then the next day you can give 2-4 times more, broken down into morning and evening feeding.

Gradually increase the portion. After 10-12 days it should reach 40-50 g. “Normal” food will displace the mixture, but the transition should be smooth.

It’s not always the crumbs who take innovations with enthusiasm. Sometimes they refuse to try. In that case, they’ll have to force puppies. Of course, carefully. Usually the babies will be happy to eat after that.

The main rule of thumb: first let your puppy try the product by checking his body’s response. If there are any problems, you’ll understand this from the baby’s faeces.

A few days after the first “dish” you can add something else to the menu. A scotch is a good way to get to know the meat. Babies can only eat veal lean meat. Give the pea first. After a week, a daily portion of meat is taken to the size of a chicken egg. They stop scraping, they just cut it fine.

Dry puppy food is diluted with warm water and left for 15 minutes. During this time, the pellets turn into porridge. 2-3 pieces will be enough for “acquaintance”. Gradually they stop soaking the food from about 6 weeks, when both teeth and stomach can cope with it.

This is the most preferable type of food. The composition of the finished product is balanced, so you do not have to worry and scrupulously calculate the amount of necessary nutrients.

What other products are suitable for supplementary feeding? Milk porridge (buckwheat or rice), omelette, milk and eggs. Vegetables (zucchini, pumpkin, carrot, etc.) are stewed and then mashed to consistency.

What will you feed your puppies next? If you prefer the dry food option, try to move on to it completely. Straighteners should give as little as possible of the tidbits as possible. Be sure to warn the future hosts of the kids about which diet to follow.
